  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from William G. Moore -- Howard French retells world history, with a central role for Africa : In the 1830s, Hegel claimed that Africa was "no historical part of the world". Howard French brings the receipts not only to show the continent's centrality in the making of the modern world, but argues convincingly that much of what Europe goes on to achieve does not occur without Africa and Africans. Having read Kenneth Pomeranz's "the Great Divergence" and Jared Diamond's "Guns, Germs and Steel", French does justice here to Africa's participation in the making of the modern world. I hope it will be incorporated into curricula from elementary to graduate programs. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from K. O. O. -- This is a must read book. : This book is a must read for everyone. It is a much-needed contribution to our understanding of the role of Africans and Africa in shaping the modern era. French provides an incredibly well researched and yet very accessible account of the many different ways in which Africa and its peoples contributed to Early Modern global history. Like the great journalist that he is, he manages to weave a compelling narrative bringing together centuries of material. Both readers with prior knowledge of African history and those who are encountering it for the first time will love every single page of this book. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from connie osei -- Africa and Africans at the center of the global political economy is groundbreaking! : French’s thesis is groundbreaking! It allows for a rereading of the global historical trajectory that hews to the facts, and therefore the truth! The book belongs with classics by Eric Williams, Walter Rodney, Vincent Bakpetu Thompson, and Chinweizu! It’s refreshing! ( Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Dean Willis -- The factual history of this world as it pertains to the enslavement of African people. : I used this history to understand what the enslavement of African meant to the economic wealth at the foundation of the modern world.
